Lotta Pottery, c.1865, Large Water Container, Lidded Water Jug, Barrel, Water Container Rare Lotta Bath Set, Antique Pottery

Huge Lotta Pottery Lidded Water Container. This rare piece is part of a Bath Set (set would have also included a basin, a cup, and a small lidded dish) created by Lotta Pottery in mid to late 1800s.

Inside this container there is a handwritten note stating Made in 1865. I was only able to find one reference to this rare piece (or Lotta Pottery in general) stating that it is listed in Deboldt's Reference Book of American Pottery as c. 1880. Also found a picture of a man sitting with his entire bath set of this gorgeous pottery, writing into Collectors Weekly experts asking for more info in 2013, it is still marked as a mystery. The mark on the bottom is Lotta, with the L being shaped like a tree branch. (see pictures) This piece came from an Estate Sale.

This piece has a light blue milky glaze and is surrounded by pink flowers, The handles are creamy white with gold gilt trim. The lid is scalloped, and trimmed in gold gilt. It is simply gorgeous. The upper edge of the container is also scalloped, with the lid nesting along a ledge inside the scalloped neck of the jug.

The interior of the water container has some areas of staining, most likely stains from Iron in the well water back in the mid 1800s. On the underside of the lid is a small chip, not visible when the lid is on, as it is tucked on the underside of the lip. I have included a close up with measurements in picture #5. There is crazing, as to be expected on a large piece of pottery that is approx. 150 years old, however, the crazing does not in any way detract from the beauty or appeal of this piece. Wear on gold gilt.

Measures (with lid in place) 14 1/2 inches high and is 15 inches across from the outer edge of each handle. Very heavy, weighing in at almost 9lbs.
